what's wrong with bill? when two people loved each other, gotten married, there is no one in this world who can jeopardize that relationship. as you said, you both are grown, just explain it to your family what makes you two loved each other. pretty sure, they will understand and respect your decision. if they don't, you are the one going to lived your life the way you wanted to live, so don't worry about other people's tripping. as long as you both love, respect, stand by each other, you will make it.
don't hide it, let everyone know, both of you are happy with your marriage and prove it.

Something somewhat similar happened in my family, and I think my parents were a little upset that they weren't a part of my brother's life enough to know about his fiance sooner. I think it's fair to give them some time to know him. That said, if you've got a date planned and all that, I think I'd still try to give them a chance to be a part of it instead of keeping it a secret.
