Probably contractual obligations as to the number of times a show can be transmitted within a set period of time.

I'm not sure of the exact details but broadcasters who own the copyright outright on their programmes (made 'in-house') can repeat them as often as they like.

Third Party companies who make TV programmes for broadcasters (the broadcasters commission a series) hold the copyright and usually sell the rights to broadcast a show as follows: -

- Broadcast once.
- Broadcast as many times as required
- Broadcast multiple times but with a minimum period between repeats (a week, a month, three months, a year, etc.)

The original copyright holders may be issuing a DVD soon of that show so they will not want a broadcaster to show the program as it may hurt DVD sales.

Since listings are arranged months in advance and printed over a week in advance in the main TV listings magazines, it's not always possible to get permission to show something on the night that had been previously arranged.

I don't think it's to do with football.
Last week they showed the Two Ronnies (an episode which contains a favourite sketch of mine) on ITV2, so I turned over to ITV2+1 to watch it again 1 hour later, only to see that caption.
I hope someone can come up with the answer because my family are wondering why, too.

Football because of different TV agreements between different countries FA's and UEFA. This is so if someone in Glasgow isn't put off going to a local cup tie because Liverpool and Arsenal on the TV, so they blank it out on 'Sky'.

That's the only reason I can think off because BBC channels where the same!
