Hi Guys,
WHat does Epithets and slurs mean in this site?
I just fired my laptop up and got a humdinger of a violation from YA, nearly filled my screen, as its an American based site caN SOME AMERICAN PERSON PLEASE TELL ME WHAT i DID WRONG? what does these two words mean in American as some english words mean something different over there.
Theres me, a nice big cheery unhealthy guy who wouldnt hurt a fly, and get a violation letter the size of my front rooms rug.
If I have said something offensive I am trulet sorry, I know one word I used ref to gays, but my friend was gay and he called himself one regularly. P**f sorry to any gay people I didn't mean to offend, I like you guys you are ok.

Just to let our American friends who dont know our chit chat here in the UK. Now I am a non smoker and always have been, I dont drink either, and me being a Scot thats unusual because us Scotts are famous for our Whiskey etc. Now in the Uk if someone wanted a cigarette, some people say hey Jimmy u got a ***? now that three letter word means a cancer stick because thats what u get smoking them. But I do know if I used that three letter word in the States I would get some weird looks.
To my dear friends from the states who answered my question, thank you all so much and god bless you all.

Although many countries share the English language, there are several words that have evolved to mean different things in these countries.
A certain word that begins with f to refer to a meatball or a bundle of sticks and is shortened to mean a cigarette in the UK has a completely different meaning as a derogatory and insulting epithet against gay people in the US. I visited the UK a few years ago and a guy asked me if he could bum a f** and my mother got a shocked look on her face and wondered why I handed him a cigarette.
Since Yahoo groups all English speakers together, a reader would interpret a word from their own perspective since they do not know which country you are writing it from.
Don't worry about it and just look at as learning what a certain word means in the US. Although I didn't see your other question or answer, it was quite kind of you to take the time to explain that it was unintentional. Thank you.

I think the words your friend might use to describe himself isn't appropriate for you to use if you're straight.I'm a dyke and often use that term but if a straight person were to use it then i would be seriously offended. The same way some black people use a certain N word in general conversation but it is entirely inappropriate for a white person to use that word even if their friend uses it!The word p**f here in England is a slur against gay men ,whether or not your friend says the word is irrelevent-if you ain't gay yourself then don't use a word like that. But the apology will go a long way-unless the person is the type to hold a grudge, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

For future reference (and because I'm assuming you're sincere here), hearing your gay friend refer to himself as something does NOT mean it's a word you should use to refer to other gay people who aren't that same friend. ESPECIALLY on the internet, and even more especially on this site where we do get trolled more often than we get real questions. "Gay" will do. "homosexual", while not preferable, is also not exactly a slur. Pretty much anything else can be seen as a slur or epithet.

Sometimes it's just faulty software that misread a word, and sometimes it's just a user who's easily offended and reported you. Yahoo doesn't have the time to actually read this, so don't take the notice seriously. If you don't see what's wrong, write them back. Sometimes they re-instate what you wrote and give back whatever points you lost. I see your word for gay has been masked, I assume by Yahoo, so it's also a matter of cultural differences. That word is common in the Empire, offensive in the States. Again, live and learn, try, try again.

Yeah, the word fa& does not mean cigarette here in the states, it is a slur, short for fa&&ot.
A reverse example is the use of the word fanny. In the US, it is a friendly and non vulgar term meaning buttocks. In the UK, only women have a fanny, and it is not on their back side.
I can only imagine the looks Americans must get when they go to the UK and mention their "fanny pack" (UK: bum bag).
Take for example the sentence: "Margaret, give me that extra roll of film, I stuck it in your fanny pack". It has a totally different meaning depending on where you are from.
See the source link for an interesting English to American Dictionary and references to both words.

No there is not any one strike rule in heaven... besides Christians believe that in Heaven you're perfect and free from sin... plus you do not have a body so that you'll't have a lesbian relationship.

To be honest I doubt you were any worse with what you said than half the morons that seem to ask dumb questions with impunity. However you were most likely reported and therefore sent an automated violation which is made long so that it can cover any one of a number of 'offences' so the 'Answer police' don't have to personalise any email sent!

Epithets and slurs means that you said something that someone found offensive. The most common ones here is *** or homo, used in a very derogatory way. Post what you said, and we will tell you why what you posted was wrong!

I got one the other day too. All because someone asked what could be done to advance gay rights and I responded criminalize religion (half joking) but half serious too, and someone didn't like it. I responded back to Yahoo that I wanted an explanation of why my opinion was considered invalid and insulting when so many uber-religious folks aren't not chastised for their comments about gays going to hell, trying to force their lifestyle down the throats of all. Its a two way street out there, and I want my explanation. I know how you feel. I'm done venting now.

Slurs are anything that Yahoo determines it doesn't like. I just got a violation for not answering a question, even though I did answer it.
