Because, states in India are different from states in USA. In USA, the states have more power in legislation and governance. For example they can have different tax rates. In India it is not so. America is Just a political integration of different states. A country was made up by the union of states. Only thing these states doesn't have is an independent military.

However Indian states are less powerful and central government is controlling most of the policies. We have a parliamentary democracy. It is not a presidential democracy. Our president doesn't have any veto power.

India is a single country and it is not a political union of states. The states in India were created just for the convenience of governing. So calling it United States of India will make the other meaning. So we should not call it USI. India is the best. May be in future there may be countries like United States of Africa or United States of Europe. But India is Just India.

No USI since the indian states are merged into a central authority. In USA, each and every state has its own flag and constitution, only Federal government act like a supervisory thing. they are different and its like a treaty to be one.

But its not the case with India, we have gain independence by sheding the blood of people from different states. In our culture its nation first then individual. In USA, its state first, then nation then individual.

its better for india to remain Republic of India or 'ROI', the new mool mantra for future "Return on Investment". you can say this to foreigners....

Well, simply because we are India and not America. Do we need to always follow others ? NO, we can be original. Do we have a richer history than U.S.A. ? YES, much to the dismal of our current stature.

Are we a federation of states with different set of laws for each state?
NO, we have a common law (barring a few exceptions, thanks to the State List as mentioned in the Constitution)
Criminal laws are the same everywhere in India. In the U.S. every state has its own set of laws.

Because we're not from the east, and anyway if you looked at a map we're in the west and we're called the americas (North america, Central America and South America) and because there are states in this country and we're united per our forefathers (people who politically put this nation together),the Union of states then that's why we're called the United States of America.
