Guy (Guido) Fawkes was part of a plot to kill King James I. He was caught and tortured before being executed by being burned alive.

On the 5th November, British people build big fires and burn effigies known as "guys". We set off fireworks and eat toffee apples to celebrate the brutal death of this man. It was considered patriotic but is now more of a way to have fun.

There is an older tradition of fire festivals in winter time, Fires were built to keep away evil spirits at Hallowe'en (Samhain) and at the Winter Solstice (Yule) to bring back the sun.

Here is a very poor translation of what I just wrote. Sorry.

In the olden days, children would go around the neighbourhood with the Guy Fawkes straw model, the would beg for money by asking 'penny for the guy?'. The straw model would then be burnt at a big bonfire. More recently, models of unpopular politicians or celebrities may be burned at the bonfire (instead of Guy Fawkes).

Many people also celebrate with fireworks (i suppose because the explosions of the fireworks look a little like the explosion that would have happened had Guy Fawke's plan to explode Parliament been successful).

Guy Fawkes was part of a Catholic plot to blow up King James 1 of England VI of Scotland in 1605 (who was a Protestant). They were caught and exectuted.

Their plan had been to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder - hence our tradition of bonfires and fireworks; this is also where our tradition of burning a "guy" on the bonfire (a stuffed doll, often resembling some hated public figure of the time) comes from too.

Having said that, most people in the UK who celebrate Bonfire Night just have a bonfire and fireworks - we don't discuss treason and Catholic/Protestant issues, or the issue of royalty v republicanism. And I haven't seen a guy since my childhood in the 1970s.

I'd say Bonfire Night nowadays is just about fire and fireworks.

Guy Fawkes intended to blow up The Houses Of Parliament with gunpowder. He failed. The night the plot failed was the 5th of November, we now celebrate the 5th of November as Bonfire/Fireworks Night. People celebrate the night with fireworks. They may have a firework party in their back garden and invite family and friends or go to a public display.

Guy Fawkes was part of a Catholic group who tried to blow up Parliament and the King on 5th November, 1605. He was caught first, under Parliament.

Still elebrated with fireworks and bonfires by a lot of people. I celebrate 5th November because it's my birthday :)
