A town has a population of 18,500. 17% are under 21 years of age. 24% are 21 or over but less than 35. 33% are 35 or over but less than 60. 20% are over 60 but less than 75. The rest are 75 or over. If you have to be 21 or over to be on a jury, what percentage of the population can serve on a jury?

Yes, Ashley is correct. The answer is 83%. The only relavent fact you need is that 17% of the population is under 21 years of age, because it only states that you have to be over 21 to serve on the jury. So if 17% is under 21, then 83% is over 21. You don't need all the other facts.

All that matters for this problem is that 17% of the population is under 21, meaning that they cannot serve on a jury. If you subtract 17% from 100%, then you are left with 83%. 83% of the population can serve on a jury.

well you did no give the percentage of people who were over 75 that is a key because they have to share time on a jury. but as you say it just adding things up 77% can serve but the over 75 crowd will mess that up. that is adding up if you subtract 17 from 100 you will get 83% Is this a trick question like how may 9s are in 100?? 83%

There's only 17% under 21, that means everyone else is 21 or more, and can be a jury.

100% - 17% = 83%

Everyone (100%) except people under 21 (17%), so 100% - 17% = 83%.

17% are less than 21
meaning 83% are more than 21

83% of 18500 = 18500*83/100 = 15355

The other divisions of age groups are not necessary. They're just there to throw you off.
