I only pick stars for those who I am really interested in seeing the outcome of the best answer
I don't think it makes people competitive but I think people do click on thumbs ups or downs or even stars just to throw people off

If it is a question that may interest one of my friends, then I will award a *star*. When this feature was first introduced, I probably gave a few too many, but now they have more meaning for me.
Since this feature is still new, I don't know if you could say it is making people more competitive. IMHO

I don't do anything with the stars. I'm still waiting on the Yahoo! Answers to give me my "reward" for reaching so many points.
When I get my "special surprise" then I'll use the star button

Doesn't bother me really, but it's nice to know if someone likes your question. I tend to only give stars to questions I like.
