The book jacket often provides additional information about a book. Typically, a short biography of the author and what brought him/her to write the book is included on the back flap. The front flap might give a synopsis of the book. Sometimes, the editor includes quotes from a few favorable reviews as well. The logo, name and address of the editor are also often included.
The jacket is mostly an occasion for the editor to package the book, so that it's more attractive for sale.

Advertisement purposes. When you pick up the book, you see a pretty or exiting picture to drag you in, then you see the words about the book that are meant to get you all exited about the book.
Visual and mental enticement.

well many times it has extra information on it, including a cover picture, short author bio, etc, while the actual book cover is left blank or simplistic.
