The main two reasons people lie is because they either think they will gain something by doing so
e.g.
in telling others they look 'cool'
they feel in control of the situation
you wont get angry
they wont have to admit they are addicted and thus out of control of a situation
or because they think they will avoid retribution
i.e.
-percieved judgemental ideas from others
-getting told off
-be forced by parents etc. to stop smoking

It is because of the guilt and stigma involved in smoking. They know on some level that they are addicted, but they don't want to admit to you or themselves that they are not in control of their own behavior.

Because they don't want to get "the lecture". If you're asking, they feel you are probably going to respond negatively.

They're embarrassed, ashamed or disgusted by their own habit, and they value your opinion so much that they'll try to hide any bad habits from you. (Ask them if they pick their zits, or chew their fingernails...)
