Just let them know up front...and don't look! If you don't look - it won't be so bad - I promise. I hate it myself but as long as I look the other way the whole time I can get through it fine.

I have a phobia of needles and phlebotomists will either help or hinder your progess. It really depends on how bad your phobia is.

When I see a needle I go into mass panic and hyperventalate so it doesn't help at all.

There are actually therapists you can go to who are trained to dispell phobias by letting you access the stimulus and teaching you to deal with it. I would recommend that route first.

But again, I know all of these things and am still too scared to make an appointment where I will have to be exposed to needles, so I can't say much lol!

I am totally afraid of needles to, but I find that when you go in and tell them you are afraid they try their best to make you as comfortable as possible. When I get blood taken, as soon as I give them my arm I turn my head away from that arm and look at something on the wall. I try not to think about it and take deep breaths. (If you don't breathe, you will pass out!) It only hurts when the needle goes in the first time, so once it's in you shouldn't feel anything. They will let you know when it's all over. Good Luck.

Introduce yourself by first name.
Ask the person how they are feeling.

Tell the person to look away, close their eyes, and breath evenly and slowly.
