I'm attending a junior college, trying to get my AS degree in Child Development. I want to then, transfer to a 4 year university to get my BA in Liberal Studies, with a minor in English. Would I have to do an extra 4 years at the university to get my BA? Or would I only need to do 2, since I'm getting an AS degree with general education class requirements being met?
I'm so confused... help please!

Usually when a person completes their AA degree from a junior college it is with the appropriate degree course in mind at another four year university. In your case, you mentioned that your degree will be an AS (associate of science) but if you are trying to get into a BA degree program (bachelor of arts) which is what Liberal Studies is considered, it is quite likely that you will have to take more "arts" or humanities classes.

Additionally, not every single one of your classes at the junior college are going to transfer to the 4 year university of your choice. Usually, a good junior college works with nearby 4 year universities to make sure most if not all of their required courses will transfer but this gets to be less and less sure as you apply to universities with less and less connection to your junior college.

The only way to know how many of your credits will transfer is to speak to a counselor at the university you are trying to transfer into (but they usually do not counsel you until you have gained admission into their school). You can try to get more info on their class requirements for graduation by looking at a copy of their newest Bulletin. That will have all the information for obtaining a degree in each of the majors. This is what you will have to follow when you get accepted.

Good luck!

(in case I forgot to mention it: if all went exactly as planned, after getting your AA or AS you would only have 2 more years at a university before getting your bachelors.)

You would need to transfer your classes from the junior college to the 4 yr. university; therefore, you should only have 2 years left. I would talk with an advisor at both the college and university.

I suggest that you simply ask your adviser.
