fairly inexpensive tennis racket, shoes, tennis balls (like Penn, not the inexpensive kind), water bottle, the clothes you need, and a towel.

Well... you'll need a racquet of course. One of the best brands is Wilson, but, as your only starting out something inexpensive would be the best.
Also, tennis balls are important! But, if your playing at a club or at school they are usually supplied. If you want to play away from either of these places then it would be wise to buy your own. And theyre handy to have even if you just want to have a hit at home.
Tennis shoes or comfy running shoes are important as well. Also the right type of clothing. Comfortable clothing such as shorts and a polo shirt is suitable for men, and shorts/skirt and singlet top or a tennis dress is appropriate for women. Being sun smart is also important if you are playing outside, sunscreen and a hat is important.
Remeber always to drink water or a sports drink when training or playing to keep you hydrated!
You could also take towels, wrist bands and a tennis racket bag for keeping all your gear in!
Good luck with your tennis!

tennis is one of those sports where you don't really need a lot of equiptment. especially if you're on a team....
you need a raquet obviously, if you're a beginner it doesn't even have to be that expensive. you need running shoes or tennis shoes and loose, comfortable clothing
for girls, they usually just wear shorts and a sleeveless shirt for practices. guys usually just wear shorts and a t-shirt.
if you're playing on a school team, they usually always provide the tennis balls. If you're practicing with an independent team, you might need to bring balls. I'd say a pack of three is good enough to last a couple practices. Beginners usually end up going through more balls because they have less ball control, so it's probably not a bad idea to have more than three.
bring water with you, running always makes you thirsty.
you really don't need too much, you probably already have most of it. have fun!
