Before the boking ring fighter would box with the crowd surrounding them holding a rope, in a ring. They would always get in on the action though, so the proper ropes were invented. They could not be suspened in an exact circle, so a sqaure was used.

My guess is that when you train as a boxer the trainer will teach righties to circle around the opponent to the left. It is dizzying at first,but it makes it harder for the opponent to hit you. Ali was great at this as are most smaller fighters. Watch for it the next time you watch a fight.

Addition: oh yeah, I forgot about the bare knuckle days.
