You would need an audio card, such as a Sound Blaster Notebook.

If your notebook has a PCMCIA slot your good to go.

You can buy a headphone plug or just take a cheap pair and cut the headphones off and plug in to the headphone jack. Make the wires long enough to reach your Stereo inputs. I use the AUX input, any will work. How I do this to protect the Stereo. Turn the laptop volume down and the Stereo up about 1/4-1/3 volume. Then slowly raise the volume on the laptop and listen. If, you start to get distortion the input volume from the laptop is too high, so lower it just a little and then you good to go and just use the stereo volume then.
The wires on headphones are very fine in size, you may find it easier to buy the correct plug @ Radio Shack or others and get some wires that more easy to work with, don't forget you will need the connectors for the other end to plug to the Stereo inputs.
This the best "Sound Card" you can get for your money. ;-)
IF, you not sure which wire is which use an OHM Meter to check, notice the Plug has three separate metals; 1 is ground to both speakers the other 2 are your left & right channels. Once you determine the ground wire then you can make your setup.

you could try an adapter that goes from your headphone jack on your laptop to what ever input you have on your stereo. like headphone jack-to-RCA adapter. try best buy or radio shack. take a look at the link to see what it would look like
