The facts of the Holocaust --- even just a portion of the story-- are so overwhleming and utterly appalling as to be unbelievable to those who know nothing of history or don't wish to believe that Humankind can be so flawed and ugly. I strongly suspect that those who actually "deny" the Holocaust happened or deny the scale of what happened, have other agendas, and actually accept some of the truth, but for their own (nefarious) reasons, choose to "deny" the truth. It is part and parcel of human nature. Just as there as those who deny that there are poor in America, homeless, or a widespread hunger problem in the most wonderful, prosperous, wealthiest and wasteful nation on Earth (by the way, this is NOT a political statement!). World War II is such an incredibly immense and complex series of events over 6 years (and of course the years leading up to the war itself) that many people who are ignorant of history (some willfully so) or just new to the study of it, can't conceive how such a thing as the Holocaust could have happened; to them it is not "real". As complex as WWII was, it did come down to Good vs,. Evil; what is complicated morally is that there were good people on the wrong side (in the Axis powers) and on the Good side, a lot of well-intentioned people made decisions and took actions that, at the very least, were then and are today, morally questionable. Just as we have in Iraq today. One of the reasons why war is not such a great idea, but we humans are going to be stuck with it for awhile. Let us hope we can learn and not always repeat our mistakes.

That depends on who "some people" are. Some people claimed that the Holocaust was a Jewish conspiracy and this thought is brought about by Anti-Semite's.
The first Holocaust deniers were the Nazi's themselves. Scholars have done loads of research on Nazi commanders such as Heinrich Himmler who, as the war was ending, ordered camp commandants to destroy records, crematoria , and any other evidence of mass murder.
Then as the German SS moved throughout the world they used their propaganda skills to support their claim.
What I don't understand is. with the overwhelming evidence from both survivors who have numbers tattooed in their skin, the testimony of civilians who lived in areas where their Jewish neighbors were arrested and then disappeard, sometimes leaving children in their care, the huge concentration camps that still exist to this day and video/photographic evidence, how someone can deny that this happened.

Some people deny that it happened because they can't face the truth. People tend to deny things when they are afriad of the truth or they are too afriad to face the truth. Some people find it easier to deny that the holocaust happened because they don't want to think that there are horrible people like Hitler in this world, or if they are German, they don't want to face the fact that their people killed 6 million Jews. I mean think about it...it's like almost all of the people in NYC. The current population of NYC is about 8 million. That's like killing 6 out of every 8 people in NYC. It's shocking right? The Holocaust still shocks some people. They can't believe that something that horrible could happen, so they deny it.

OSU, there are very few people who deny it unconditionally. Most of the so-called "deniers" question whether the Holocaust was as extensive as most of us have been lead to believe.
There's some science involved here too, such as the testing of soil at the former camps. At some, the cyanide levels were not nearly high enough to support the number of people that were claimed to have been executed there.
The enslavement of African-Americans: now THERE's a Holocaust for ya.

They lie for political reasons. Both communism and Islam based on lies. They think that by lying they can get political advantages. But their destiny is destruction and God' judgment.
