When did the U.S. put claim to being sole owners of the moon?

Do you think that, just because we planted a flag there, that we've claimed it as our property?

Heck, there's nobody on the moon now, and no other nation has had the gumption to go visit since we last did, so I guess it still belongs to God and the Universe.

We don't. Under international law--which the US is sigatory to--anything in space is international territory and cannot be claimed by anyone.

However, even if that treaty did not exist, we would have no claim on the moon--any claim would have lapsed long ago because we never went back.

Absolutely, if you think of it simply as land. However, the US -did- abandon it with talk of going back and other countries have been there since.

Now there are treaties etc, but the QUESTION is what do I "think" soooo:

Ownership, at this point, would seem to depend strictly on who STAYS there, not just who has been there first, most or longest.

I think whoever builds the first habitat there should be able to lay claim to it.

No but im sure that wont stop them from trying. you can allready buy a star or place a claim on a body in space.
but saying and doing are two differant things. as is claiming and keeping it.
