Yes, it was. The two sides were playing a game of chicken, and with tensions high, a false move from either party would have triggered a nuclear war. Few people realize how close we came.

We will never know the answer to that question. The two super powers, the Soviet Union and the United States, went head to head on Russian missiles being in Cuba. They were allegedly removed, but Kennedy made concessions too which consisted of removing US missiles from Turkey where they were aimed at Russia. Thus a confrontation that could have ended in nuclear war was averted.

Yes it could have and nearly did. If the Soviets had not removed them, we would have had no choice but to nuke Cuba before they could use them on us. Kind of like what we are facing with Iran now. We may have to nuke them if they get the nuclear capability. They have said in so many words that they will eradicate Israel and the US. So it may come down to who fires first. And we have the upper hand now, letting them get the footing may be to foolish to allow.

It was more a power play between the Americans and the Soviets. It appeared to be more of a "see who will back down first" sort of crisis.

Yes, American warships were dropping depth charges on Soviet subs that were armed with nuclear missiles.
I heard an interview with one of those sub's commanders. He said he had given the order to fire a nuke, but was questioned by another officer and eventually talked out of it.
