I'm not sure how much you know about music history, but your best bet would be to go with composers from the Romantic period - this period is more emotional in nature. I've included a couple selections, but there are definitely more from these composers. One more tip: for sad music, you usually want things in the minor key (as opposed to major).

Ludwig van Beethoven -
Moonlight Sonata - opus 27, no. 2 (Adagio Sostenuto)

Frederic Chopin -
Nocturne No. 1 in B flat minor - opus 9, no. 1

Johannes Brahms -
Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor - opus 15 (Adagio)

Robert Schumann -
String Quartet in A major - opus 41, no. 3 (Adagio molto)

Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky -
Symphony No. 6 in B minor - opus 74 "Pathetique" (Allegro lamentoso)

I really liked the violin music on the movie "Fargo." Its not necessarily sad but it is very sobering and moving.
