sounds like a old '80's style sportster. best answer i could give u is to ask this in the sportster tech section of harley chat group. http://www.harleychatgroup.com registration is free.

points set at .016 to .018 the book says absolutely nothing about the dwell.I have a 1975 xlch w/points the last set I installed was 4 years ao and haven't had any trouble with them.

Dwell angle is just the duration that the breaker points are closed.
Shop manuals don't list dwell angle for ignition timing. I don't know what your bike's point gap is. The only manuals I have show early Harley gaps as 0.018". Newer ones are probably different. Look it up, or ask another question.

The dwell angle is not important. If you correctly set the point gap to .016 - .018 you'll be fine.

I strongly recommend that you save your pocket change, lose the archaic and inaccurate point system and join the rest of us in the 21st century by converting to an electronic ignition. Your bike will love you for it...
