Unlikely the 1.8 is a bigger engine?

Yes it will as the combustion chamber of the 1.6 will fit inside the bore of the 1.8. I can't be 100% sure, but I think the capacity difference comes from a longer stroke (Different crank) as opposed to a wider bore. Probably all that's different then with the heads are the cams.

No, the valves etc in the 1800 are bigger, that is unless you want a 1.8 with 1.6 performance.
