Most NHL arenas are around 20,000
They frequently sell out, but filling a 70,000 seat facility is unlikely with the delicate fan base the NHL has
The cost of the building alone will probably prohibit it

There are a few reasons it won't happen.
1. The NFL has a larger fanbase. It's easier to fill.
2. The poorest NFL teams can save money by making an outdoor stadium. No NHL team has that luxury. They need to maintain the ice and it would cost too much money to do that with 70,000 people.
3. NFL teams play what, 16 games? 8 at home? Thats 8 games every fan has to go to. The NHL has 82. 41 at home? That is too many games to have 70,000 religeous fans show up for.
The only possibility would be down the line if hockey becomes more popular, rinks switch to artificial ice, and they cut the number of games down.

Every one's answer is the same-there aren't the fans to fill it. But even IF they had the fans to fill it what fan would want to be in the top row of a 70,000 seat arena where you would not only not be able to see the puck you probably couldn't even make out the names and numbers on the back of jerseys. I'd rather sit at home and watch it on tv. That is a BIG reason why they would never be able to fill an arena that size--visibility.

And if they did that, how would the people in the nosebleed sections feel about not seeing the game too well from about 100 yards out? Not too good.
Though Anaheim could fill an arena that size if everything wasn't so Los Angeles centered in Southern California. Especially since the Kings suck. Anaheim is a victim of no local Orange County outlets and LA bias in the area when it comes to sports. Look at the Angels. They're better than the Dodgers, and they had to incorporate Los Angeles into their name to make the team more marketable.

Why would they want it. NFL 16 games. NHL 82 games. So 5 times as many games. That means an Arena at 14,000 Avg a game is the same as an NFL 70,000 avg game. You do the Math.

No because football is more of a sporting "event" then a sports game. The NHL has 41 home games per season, giving ample chance for fans to see thier team play. Football on the other hand has only 8 home games a season making the supply of games lower increasing the demand for tickets. Futhermore the culture of American football is drastically different from that of North American Hockey. Football has a pre and post game parking lot culture, while hockey does not.

I don't think so. If you sit in the nosebleeds, you won't be able to see the players' numbers so you won't know what's going on. The standard NHL rink is just too small for an arena that size.

Why would you want that? Arenas now fit the game perfectly. It would be more expensive for the teams aswell. It will never happen hopefully. I dont think fans would like to sit on the highest level where they wont even see the puck.

it would not work today, but i know two teams that would fill out a 70,000 seats arena yes the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs you get these two playing each other and you would sell out. Montreal has the biggest arena in the NHL and always sells out.

It will probably work on two markets. Montreal and Toronto. These two teams fill out/sell out each games. Habs got the biggest arena with over 21,000 seats.
