I think the princess told him to open the door with the tiger behind it because she was very mean and selfish and would much rather have seen the handsome man dead than in the arms of another woman. The princess also knew that the young man like the other woman behind the door, so out of jealousy she probably sent him to his death.

Each time I would 'sit' in the princess' shoes, I imagined the lady coming out. My feelings were of great sorrow and loss. I was jealous and knew I would grieve for as long as they lived.
But when the tiger came out, I felt immediate regret and horror. My grief and guilt would haunt me all of my life.
So, I decided not to decide and that is where I am today. I'm 56 and 1st read the story when I was about 13. I've never forgotten the story and have never been certain of what I would choose.

Yes, I have. I don't remember which I picked. I think it was the lady. Yeah, it was.
If you're looking for another good short story, try "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.

Yes, ages and ages ago!
I think I picked the Lady back when I read it, but I can't remember why ...
Now I guess I'll have to go read it again. :)

I think it was the tiger, considering the barbaric nature of the women (the one he loved, i can't remember her name).
I think she would much rather have seen him die than in the arms of another.
