I am at the point where I am ready to move on to the Temple of Time but I can't get the sword back into the receptacle. I have hit it a hundred times but no go....any suggestions on the sword technique to use or how to get the sword back in it's original spot?

You don't use a sword technique to put the sword in the pedastal. You just go up to it and press the A button. This will open the doorway to the past, where the Temple of Time looks in much better condition. Now go to the pedastal and do the same and the route to the dungeon will open.

I just beat that level! Anyways, you don't want to hit and want to place i think you should hit a when you are at the pedestal
