The song is about looking out for somebody, taking on their burdens etc. The singer is saying that he doesn't mind and it isn't a heavy burden because he feels close to the person he is helping...as if he was his brother, even though he may not be.

Hope this helps. I've liked this song for 40 years.

It was written for the "Boystown" organization and yes, hea ain't heavy means he's not a burden and I will help him.
