The pretty rainbow of colors is caused by the fact that the back of a cd is basically a very complex diffraction grating. whenever light hits an object that is not transparent (light can not go through), the angle that it hits the object will affect not only in which direction the light will reflect, but often it makes the diferent colors of light separate. A difraction grating is a surface that will only reflect light of specific wavelengths (or colors) depending on how it is designed.

A cd uses this technique to hold data; a laser beam is shined on the disk, and the way in which the light reflects is interpreted by the computer. since the cd data is basically a series of different diffraction gratings, your eye interpets a very wide array of colors.

The CD has a pattern of microscopic holes which carry the information for the recording. The iridescent rainbow effect is produced by the way the wavelengths of the light react with this pattern. With butterflies and some birds such as starlings and humming birds microscopic scales on the wings or feathers have the same effect.

Interesting use of language there, in so far as you appear to be making up your own.

If I understand you correctly, the reflection from compact disk surfaces gives that rainbow effect because the surface has microscopic parallel lines which cause light to be diffracted. The amount of diffraction caused by these lines is related to the wavelength of the incident light. So the spectrum of any light reflected from the surface of a CD is split into its component wavelengths, hence the rainbow relfection.

Cheers.
