Ha...I just read the answer to this in one of my son's books...

"They were named after the city of Newton, Massachusettes...but they were actually created in nearby Cambridgeport, in 1895. The name Fig Cambridgeport would have been a mouthful in itself, so the inventors opted for Fig Newton."

I'm pretty sure it was named after a different Newton. It isn't an unpopular last name.
