I was driving my Rover 25 car when I couldn't get 2nd or 4th gear. When I stopped I realised I couldnt get reverse gear either. I had to drive home in 1st and 3rd gear. Does anybody know what is wrong with the car before I take it to a garage.

If you can, try and check the linkage between the gear lever and the gearbox. It may be loose or damaged or worn out.
Does your gear lever feel floppy?

Does your gear lever feel different than from before the gears played up.

I really think it is the linkage, so try and get it checked either by yourself or a friend who is mechanically minded as some garages could tuck you up good and proper and give you a huge bill.
I really feel that your gearbox is fine, and beleive its the linkage.

Please let me know how you get on.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I am not sure how to get another one going....and my question is quite similar! In summary, I can out my Rover 25 in to gear when the engine is off, but not when it is on - it does not move into any of the gears or into reverse - the gearstick feels pretty normal, as does the clutch pedal. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and what I should expect a garage to quote/suggest? Thank you all very much!

your gear stick is atached to a linkage underneath the car as all the gears you describe ie 2 4 and reverse these are all the gears you select at the pull backwards of the gearstick this usually can be realigned with simple adjustment underneath the car and dont let anyone rip you off

I don,t think It is the linkage,it could be that the second motion shaft in your gearbox as moved ,for the gears your having trouble with are all on the second motion shaft.

its either the gearbox linkage from the stick to the box, which has either popped off its clip... (highly likey) or its the layshaft gear selector in the box itself... which you ought to pray to teh gearbox gods it isnt... as its expensive.

although (he say clutching at straws) i had a landrover, which wouldnt go into gear...all it was was a lack of gearbox oil... so check the gearbox oil levels as well as the linkage.

I'd agree with Denise, almost certainly the linkage. Might just need popping back on.

It's the gear linkage, 99% sure of that.
