Mp3 is a term for audio or as we may call it music files
Mp4 is for video
So if a device says mp4 compatible or available it means that is has the capabilities to watch videos.
Good luck :p

MP3 is, as you know a audio compression format.

MP4 or MPEG-4 part 14 is a video and audio compression format. It can be streamed over the internet and often played using Apple's quicktime. It allows a large video file to be highly compressed down to a much smaller size.

MPEG-4 standard (ISO 14496-14) is a streamable container format and supports all kinds of multimedia content and content including animated graphics, etc. It is also less lossy than the MP3 format so the percieved quality of two files of similar bitrate is better wth the MP4 structure.

as far as i know, the only major difference is that mp4 can also compress video(for example: a website that i use to convert youtube videos into downloadable files offers mp4 as one of the options).
I believe it also has better sound quality too.

the compression technique used in mp4 is advanced as compared to mp3. the compression in mp4 is more as compared to mp3 so you can save more mp4 tracks as compared to mp3 tracks in same amount of memory space.
