Hello. As a local from Kos, i let you know that you can hop to the following islands. Rhodes, Kalymnos, Leros, Lipsi, Patmos,Nissyros. These are for your daily purposes, meaning, that you can go for a day's trip. Then, Kos has other connections like Samos island, and Symi island which you may have to stay overnight. Then comes Turkey where you can go for a day's trip to Bodrum and Turgut Reis. If you wish for more advebture you can even visit the Cyclades islands but the overnights there may exceed the number of two. There is also the chance for a 3-island trip with the wooden boats but from those islands only Kalymnos is the biggest. Then, you visit Pserimos and Plati islets. I hope i have managed to answer a big part of your question. But if you have some more answers, i will be around.

Kos is totally different from Chios or Khios, don't let anyone confuse you. Lesvos is nowhere near either. You can hop to Turkey, Kalymnos and Nisyros, even on 1-day excursions. As for Patmos, it is also worth going, not too far, because it is the island of the Apocalypse, a world heritage site and it has a wonderful monastery. Rhodos is not too far either, also a world heritage site, medieval castle and great beaches and archaeological site of Lindos.
By the way, Kos is wonderful too, don't just stay at Psalidi, go to the archaeological site (Asclepieion), go to the horse riding trips near Tigaki-Alyki, and go to the south, towards Kefalos, where there are great beaches.

My God, once again many people in this site have no idea of geography...I am not speaking about you, but about some answers you got.Kos is the second island of Dodecanese, the first is Rhodes(my island), and near Kos you ll find Nisiros,Tilos, Leros, and thn Patmos, which is wonderful .Dont miss Rhodes, it is the capital of Dodecanese,Word Heritage City,2 hours with the katamaran, and the other islands too. And ask please greeks, not your citizens, because it is the second time I read answers which ahve nothing to do with the place one island it is.Chios is in the north AEGEAN sea,Kos in the south..They will send you to Madagascar next time if you listen to them.hehehehehe...
