It depends on what kind of music you like. I tend to add older songs that are great but that I might not have discovered yet.
If you like alternative and indie rock, you should add some Interpol and Beck on there. Some great Interpol songs are "Evil" and "Narc."
Add "Girl," "The New Pollution," and "Loser" by Beck too. Franz Ferdinand has some great songs too- try "The Fallen" and "40 ft."
If you're into hip-hop and rap try "Slick (Cool Like That)" by Digable Planets, "Nothin' " by N.O.R.E., and pretty much anything by Outkast and Kanye West.
Other personal favorites of mine are Elliott Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Johnny Cash.
Your best bet might be to go to Rhapsody.com and check out the playlists they have there to get a feel for what you'll like.

go to itunes and look at the top 100 and preview the ones that dont say "country" as genre
