In my carry on baggage I brought makeup, including an eyelash curler and a mirror... and some cds and magazines and a cd player... and a scarf... a bunch of pens and pencils and markers and books. Anyway, that was allowed. But I had some perfume in it and they made me take it out. You can't really take liquids or sharp objects. If you take a liquid or liquids, they have to be like 3 ounces and you have to put them in a clear plastic bag.

There is a restriction on that... you can't bring any seeds or anything. If it's something like chocolate, it's ok. If it's something you could plant here, or it would disrupt the ecosystem in any way, you can't bring it. In other words, if it's something that you can put in the ground and grow, and it doesn't grow here naturally, you aren't allowed having it. They also ask you what countries you have been in before traveling to the U.S. because of things like bird flu. They also ask you if you've been around any livestock... as in... have you touched any. They also ask you if you have $10,000 or more, because you're not allowed taking that much apparently.

The rules are basically the same. So if its a no here dont bring it back. There may also be food plant animal restrictions on how much of something you can take and bring from other countries.

In terms of what you can carry on, security at London will be about the same as in the US -- small amounts of liquids/gels are OK as long as they're packed in a small plastic baggie; small means not more than 100ml/3oz and 8inches square for the baggie.

The issue that catches many Americans unawares is that you can only take ONE bag, NOT one bag plus a personal item. A purse or a briefcase is a bag, and you can only have one. You can put a purse/backpack/whatever _inside_ another bag for screening, as long as the other bag doesn't exceed 22x17x10.
