He probably was upset because a lot of people who are in a desperate way hold doors open with the hope of getting some spare change from you. He was probably looking for more change so he could buy more booze. Hence the "old bat" comment. I'd be upset, too, but he didn't do anything illegal. He was just rude.

I don't think that this is an issue of rights. You can't really do much in this case.
Recognize that when people drink, they are more likely to do/say whatever comes to mind. Unless he continued harrassing you after a comment best to just ignore it.
If he continued to bother you, then getting the store manager to handle the situation would be appropriate.

The only right you have is to know you are a better person by focusing on the positive in life, and ignoring the negative.

If I could sue and win every time I have been insulted I would be a very, very wealthy guy.
If that jackass is the rudest person you encounter in your life then you have very little to complain about.

Next time, just elbow him in the guts and say "Oops! At my advanced age, I have trouble controlling my reflexes" and walk on. But don't dwell on it. It was some stupid drunk guy in a store. You should have forgotten about it already.

I have looked everywhere for a definition of "intosicated" without success. Some things here on Answers leave me mystified.

unfortunately nothing, you do have to take into account that he was very drunk, just overlook his rude behavior as him being a mean drunk. I just hope that he wasn't buying anymore alcohol as the clerk at the store should have refused to sell it to him since he had appeared to be under the influence to begin with.

You could have called the cops. They might have charged him with public intoxication. Furthermore, if his presence was somehow intimidating to you, calling the cops would be quite reasonable. Cops, as well as most men, do not like men who mistreat women.
And never confront him in any way, especially if you are angry.

He was very rude, and you could actually sue him, it's a minor offense.
Do you really want to go through that? Just, next time you see him, call him @sshole.
