I have to find the slope of a ramp in my backyard

rise = 9"
run = 46"

0, 9
46, 0 ?

so is the equation
0 - 9
_____

slope = rise/run = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)

Remember, you must be consistent as to which points you pick at (x1,y1) and (x2,y2)

So you could choose

(0 - 9) / (46 - 0)

or

(9 - 0) / (0 - 46)

Either way the answer will be the same
Good job!

A slope "describes" something about a line. In your case 9/46. That is the slope. Rise= 9 Run = 46

You cannot "plot" a slope. In order to plot something, you need at least one point start with. If you are asking how to portray the slope of your ramp on a graph, you could place the starting point anywhere on the graph, the slope will always be the same in reference to that starting point.

The negative would not be necessary unless you care whether the ramp slopes to the left or right of the origin.

dude the slope is 9/46 because rise over run is the slope the only thing missing is the y intercept and that is where you begin to start. for example say your y intercept is 5 so from 5you would go up 9 and across the x axis 46

If you just want to find the slope you can just use rise/run ( 9/46 )

So the slope would be .1957

rise/run = slope
