I keep getting a warning sign saying Windows Virtual Memory is too low. I've deleted loads of stuff from my hard drive, used disk clean up and run spyware progs but I still keep getting this warning.
And evertime the sign pops up my computer freezes.

How much RAM do you have and what version of Windows? XP Professional really needs at least 512MB to run smoothly. If you have lots of programs running at startup (legitimate or malware) they use up RAM as well. When Windows needs more memory than the amount of RAM available it uses space on the hard drive called a swapfile or pagefile. If you go to Control Panel > System, on the bottom of the first tab it tells you how much RAM you have; if you then click on the Advanced tab, then press the Settings button in the Performance section, then the Advanced tab on that, it says how much Virtual Memory you have.

First, collect those two pieces of information. Then download HijackThis.exe from www.merijn.org and run it using the "Scan and create logfile" button. When the logfile appears (hijackthis.log in the same place you saved HijackThis.exe), email the log to me along with the RAM and Virtual Memory info and I can advise you on what to do.

First, get rid of anything you don't need. Go under Add/Delete programs and see if there is stuff to get rid of. Also, any temporary files.

Try turning off your system restore, cleaning the system, running the spyware system, THEN turning back on system restore. Check your settings are not too high on that too. Delete history stuff.

Run scandisk and defrag the system, under tools I think.

Also, consider buying new memory. We got some at Sams Club, it was like $88 and it really helped our system.

Lastly, you may have stuff running in the background.

In Windows XP:

RIght click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click on the Advanced tab and then on Performance Settings.
Click on the Adanced tab and then on VIrtual Memory CHange.
Now change the size of virtual memory. You will see a "Current Size" and a "Recommended Size". If the current size is less than the recommended, set it to the recommended. If the current size is the same as or bigger than the recommended, just make it bigger. Try adding about 50% to it.

What you can do about that is by upgrading your memory which can be know by right-clicking on my computer and click properties, after some times you will see a dialogue box, under Computer in the General Tab you will see the power of RAM which may be 64MB of RAM if it is so, then you have to increase it.

you're running too many programs. Go to the bottom right next to the clock and right click and close stuff that's not being used.

You can run msconfig from the start menu to disable some things that start running in the back ground too.

Other than that, restart incase your programs have memory leaks, or upgrade your hardware.

Have you restarted your computer since you've done all of that stuff? That might help...

If not, it sounds like you might have some sneaky spyware that isn't being detected or a virus.
