Unless you are flying across the border you do not need a passport until January 2008. If you are flying into or out of Mexico or any country for that matter you DO need a passport now.

To drive or walk or come by ship you do not currently need a passport until January 1, 2008. On January 1, 2008 you will need a passport to board any aircraft domestic or international.

My advice: Get a passport as soon as you can.

Not yet. They keep pushing that requirement back.
A drivers license is still all you need at this point.
The only advantage to a passport right now is that some border checkpoints are creating separate and faster lines for people with passports. I hope this helped.

People keep mentioning a recent change in the rules. That concerns FLYING in and out of Mexico, not just walking across the border. I know because I live just a few blocks from the border.
