I feel it is most common and complicated situation, were day in and day out a parent or a teacher or a friend or anybody might have to deal with.
Looking at the competition and way the lifestyle is now-a-days, it becomes evenmore challenge.
It depends on two category
1. begin with the roots: eack kid need to be brought-up in a way where they understand good & bad from childhood. which help them in making a right choice by discussions and choose best by giving different options.
2. bear with it: though certain times after giving so called good/bad knowledge, things go beyond reach either circle of friendship, interests, desires, ambitions...in such situation sitting and talking (literally). discussions and mentoring would help.
Trying to work out alternatives or make them focus and help them visualise future by giving different career options.

I am not sure whether this is possible
You can cajole and push but every child is different and they have different talent
let them grow on their own
