Because a lot of people are invested in keeping it illegal. Since small-scale marijuana trafficking is not considered a high priority by law enforcement, in order to get caught at it a perp has to be really stupid. Such cases are easy wins for prosecutors and look good on their resumes. Also for politicians, any effort to ease restrictions can be made by their opponents to look like they're "soft on drugs/crime," so it's a political football.

The real answer is that hemp is a tremendously useful plant, with applications in medicine, fiber manufacture, plastic manufacture, and any number of other industrial uses.
It was very important to the burgeoning petroleum industry that pot be marginalized to make the basic plant an anathema; it was solid competition to the petroleum/plastic lobby that had huge influence over the congress in the post WWII years. People had tolerated potheads for centuries til then, but when the plant was revealed to be serious competition to big oil.
Dr. Harry Ansliger did the dirty work and put pot on the Nasty drug list right under heroin. And let the deadly nicotine go with a green-palmed high five to the tobacco industry.
It's all hypocrisy.

Its not the government Brainiac its the will of the people that keeps pot from going mainstream. After having personally worked around pot heads in industrial settings and seeing some of the accidents that have happened because of it there is no way you could convince me that the practice is harmless or recreational. When your judgement is impaired whether it be alcohol, pot or any drug stay the hell away from me, cause its not fun its just an accident waiting to happen at work or on the highways.

It all sounds good in theory, but it'll never happen, the gov't will never legalize an uncontrolled hallucinogenic, albeit a mild one. Alcohol is legal because it is big business. Remember the Prohibition, that caused way too much crime and black market sales and it was too much of a problem so it became legal again.

i've got supported GWB on maximum of his judgements, yet no longer this one in any respect. Had I known he even thought or felt this way, and became extra attracted to making his company sponsors satisfied than doing what's sturdy for the U.S. with regard to this depend. My vote might have long gone to the self reliant. it incredibly is an American concern. no longer a political party concern.

Prove drinking is worse! You make a statement. Back it up! I disagree. I think pot is dangerous. I think drugs in general mixed with dysfunctional evolution or growing up dysfunctionally makes a very lethal combination of either rich discompassionate beings or poor apathetic beings who drag society down in a country like ours to a point we eventually get taken over and lose all our freedoms that we have fought for. Freedom is precious and requires communication, diligence and detail to keep it. It cannot be ignored unless you are ready for chaos!

Probably because they are now fully aware what pot can actually do to your body and your mind and this would only increase medical costs and other costs such as welfare etc. What you put into your body will come back and haunt you later in life. So be smart and live without this drug.

There aren't that many stoners out there. Who is to pay for your health care when you get stoned and hurt yourself? All smoking should be frowned upon.
