I wouldn't say "insane" because, well, you know what's going on don’t you? However, sick (or ill) yes. We can't tell you whether it's valid or not, you have to check with a trustworthy Muslim doctor for that, preferably a psychiatrist or something. It mostly depends on two things: a. are you aware of right and wrong during this time (I think you do, even the most acute clinical depression does not cause you to be insane) and b. will fasting cause you to become worse (in terms of your illness); if so, then you are not only entitled to break your fast but it would be advisable especially that the illness is not continuous and you can fast later. By the way, the sequence is free a slave then feed 60 poor people then fast 60 days (unlike breaking it for having intercourse which requires fasting first). Hence, you do NOT have an option, you start by looking for a slave, since there are none then you have to feed 60 poor people; you can not revert to fasting unless you are too poor to pay.
