The Industrial Revolution took place when the world began changing from an agrarian (farming) based society to one where many people began not to farm and work in other ways by manufacturing things in factories, providing services for others, and relying on the remaining farmers to provide food which they bought with the proceeds of the work in non-farming activities.
It is called the Industrial Revolution because it mainly took place because of advances in processing raw materials into refined ones like iron ore in to cast-iron. Also, manufacturing processes like FORD Motor Company's assembly line concept were changing the way things were made from craftsmen doing one at a time to many workers doing only one thing each to a product swiftly.
The shift in this was world wide but centered in Europe and America. The more people could specialize in one type of activity the more that activity improved. One guy concentrated on making stronger metal and steel was invented. It is a mixture of Iron ore and other elements, so cast iron gave way to steel. We got better ships, stronger buildings etc etc.

There were actually two industrial revolutions. In the first, people started moving more from doing their own work at home (the cottage system) to doing work in factories. As a result of these factories, people started living close to where they worked, making the cities even bigger. As a result of this, steam engines were invented and coal was used as fuel. Steam engines were originally built to transport materials, but they were soon seen as good for carrying people as well. Iron was the main material for building, and there were new inventions all over the place.
During the second revolution, the focus was mainly on oil as a fuel. Steel replaced iron as being the main material for building, and all throughout the world, industrial economies became the wealthiest in the world.
It became easier to move up in status as economies moved from being land-based to wealth-based. That is, the amount of money you had, not your birth and how much land you owned, determined your position in society.
the industrial revolution took place the most in: Europe (mainly England and Germany) and North America.
also, several new inventions:
the radio--marconi
assembly line--ford
interchangeable parts--eli whitney and ?? Daimlo
Eli whitney also invented the cotton gin.
