Adjourned means finished or finalized.

As in "the meeting is adjourned" meaning the meeting is finished.

It means 'delayed' or 'temporarily halted' as in 'it being 4pm, the Judge adjourned the hearing until 10am the next day' I know that Americans use the word 'continuance' in this context - which always sounds odd to me - as to continue means to carry on, and that is not what you are doing!

It does not mean 'finished' as some answers suggest - if you adjourn a meeting it implies there is business still to be dealt with. A meeting that has finished its agenda is 'concluded'

It can also be used in the informal sense of moving elsewhere 'lets adjourn to the kitchen'

The word comes from Old French 'ajourner' - 'to defer to a defined day'
