Straight from the Compaq specifications.

Memory Installed ------512 MB
Maximum allowed----- 2 GB (2 x 1 GB)
Speed supported ----- PC2-4200 MB/sec
Type----- 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM

So you have two memory slots. One slot has a 512 Mb memory module already in it. Now you have an empty slot and can use from a 256 Mb, 512 Mb, or 1 Gb memory module in the empty slot. If you can try to get the 1Gb memory module first. Reason, cuz if you buy a 512 Mb module and then you will have two 512 Mb modules, for total of 1 GB of Ram, no problem.

But if you decide later to upgrade to 1Gb for one of the slots, hopefully you have somewhere where you can at least sell the old 512 Mb to recoup some money back.

If you buy from the internet, make sure what kind of return policy they have. Some like crucial.com, you can get your money back or even exchange for another brand. Others, you do not get your money back, only exchange for same defective module. Some higher rated are backward compatible too. I bought my PC 3700 from Sam's store, but they are backward compatible to PC 2700. They were cheaper than the PC 2700 on the internet. You can find a good deal but SHOP around. Go to pcworld.com for more info.

So when you buy get the memory module that is :

PC2-4200, 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM
