I'm about to buy a 2nd computer and I want to know if I will need to buy a 2nd DSL modem and pay double the bill each month. Do you think I can use those phone cord splitters and run both computers off of 1 modem?

Do i have to get the router from my phone company, which is who I have service with, or can I buy one from the store? Also, If I buy one from the store, do I still have to pay for the phone company's service?

Your best bet is to go wireless. Buy a computer with a WIFI card and buy a wireless router for about $100.00. That's how mine is setup and I like it alot especially for my laptops.

You don't need to buy a second DSL modem/connection from your phone company. You also don't need to buy a router. You will need to buy a switch. These are much cheaper than routers. You'll also need 2 ethernet cables - 1 to go from your existing PC to the switch and 1 to go from the switch to your new PC.

Leave your existing PC intact. The only change you need to make the connection shared. This is a simple change. Usually when you add the switch XPwill detect it and the wizard will walk you through the steps.

You can share any type of connection by doing it this way - dialup, DSL, cable, etc. This is the cheapest, easiest and simplest way to create a home network. The good news is you don't need to call your ISP or anybody else to makethis happen. The only downside is that you will need to have the PC connected to the DSL turned on in order for the new PC to be able to use the connection. you will even be able to control the connection from the new PC, share disk, etc.

Just buy a router in the store, you are most likely to find it cheaper in the store then from the internet company. Also, you won't need to buy a 2nd modem and pay double. you can just have one dsl modem connected to your router so you can split the same dsl connection to 4 other computers.

I am using two on this one DSL modem. Just buy a cable/DSL Router, I use a Linksys, which has 4 connections for computers or printers and an outlet connection for the modem.

You do NOT need to pay for 2nd connection. But you do need a router (a device that allows you to connect multiple computers). Connect the router to your DSL modem. Connect the pc's with CAT 5 cabe (network cable) to your pcs. These routers costs about 20/30 dollars or so. Even cheaper if you can get them on sale or with rebates. They have 4 to 8 ports, depending on the model. And you guessed it, you can connect that many computers from one DSL. (you can connect up to 256 computers with daisy-chaning these routers but that is for computer professionals!)
Good luck!!!

Mell, I'm not familliar with DSL as I have cable, but I believe the configurations are similiar. On cable, the connection to the "Internet" is completed by connecting your CAT 5 cable with an RJ 64 connector attached to it to both devices,ie the cable box and your computer. Yes there are "splitters" or multiple connection port boxes that you can attach multiple computers to that has a single connection to the cable box. You should be able to do that with DSL (I hope). Go to radio shack or best buy and tell them how you want to configure your gear, they should be able to help and have the parts. BTW I solved the problem your having by going to wireless router, with a range extender so I could cover the whole house. GL and cheers, Red

go to walmart and purchase a router
they run fairly cheap these days
gateway is a good router
I know with my cable connection - I am allowed 2 ISP connections at once - meaning both computers can get online at the same time
you might want to find out from your service provider if you can hook up 2 computers through a router on your dsl connection

If you are currently using a USB modem, you're better off replacing it with a two or four port router - this means that you connect both computers to it via the ethernet/LAN sockets, and the router/modem has one connection to the phone line.
