The slacks hanger is a fine idea, but sometimes I've found the bars are too close together for ribbon spools. I've also used regular wire clothes hangers . Open the hanger at the top (untwist it) and slide the spools of ribbon onto it. Retwist (or duct tape) it shut. If you have lots of ribbon, you can hang these hangers from one another. Turn the hook part so it's perpendicular to the rest of the hanger (not parallel, as it originally comes) and hook it over the middle of the bar of another hanger you're using for the ribbon, right in between the spools. The ribbon spools will hold it in place in the center. Clamp the hook shut to form a loop. Ribbon isn't very heavy, so you can hang several of these from each other in your closet.

"pants" hangers are good for holding spools of ribbon on
ribbon organizers (boxes with holes for feeding ribbon through)
use shoes boxes and cut holes in the sides to store ribbon
tape the ends of ribbons and put in a drawer (iris cart)

I keep mine on dowels that I've installed inside my cabinet...put the dowels on the holders so you can easily remove them (kinda like a paper towel holder). I've got a friend who just got a couple of tension curtain rods (small ones) and used those in her cabinet--but she has to be a little more careful on loading them--they tend to fall down. The upside to this is that I can see my whole collection in a glance, and just pull off the amount of the ribbon without taking an entire box out, digging through it, and then finding the ribbon I want.

The TV show called "B. Original" on HGTV had an idea for making something like this (yesterday I think). You could add more "arms" if you had loads of ribbons:

(... click on the photo of "Ribbon & Trim Center" for a larger view of the final unit, then click on the words "Ribbon & Trim Center" for instructions, though you could do the same idea with different materials probably much more easily)

Most Fabric shops sell ribbon spool holders, but to be honest, if you are into crafts, Basketcases idea sounds better than any store bought case...

Some slots and punch holes in a shoe box (well, done much nicer than just that) is a great organizer. Check out http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=content&id=channel1073 for directions and a picture.
