I am assuming because they do not want to get it confused with american football - where you catch the ball ? I am sure there is a better reason though.

Also, where did the word originate (soccer)?

Thanks

No that's really it, because the two sports, Football and Soccer share a common origin. The game developed differently in different places, but with the same name.

Since the sport we call soccer is far from popular in America it is the one that got it's name changed.

Being married to a woman from Eastern Europe it's always fun to talk to her about it, she just can't believe the fact that Americans wouldn't care at all if soccer simply fell off the face of the map. It's less popular than bowling here for example.

Should American football have chosen a better and less confusing name? probably, at least we wouldn't hear about this as much then, heh the world would just marvel in shock that we could care less about "the world's sport".

soccer originated from asSOCiation football.. conveniently leaving out the football to not confuse it with american football which is simply called football in America. And the er designates, at the time period it was named, adding er was common practice and a footballer was a football(soccer) player.
