I have seen so many adverts about birth control pills, ring, and shots and how to shorten your periods. I think it is so ridiculous to put out things that will harm you in the long run. I don't particularly care for such methods of birth control etcetera.

As far as shorter periods go, well I think that is even dumber. If we stop our cycles with pills like ones being advertised on tv, we are risking ourselves in a big way. Lots of women already clot when they have their periods. Why would you want to risk more clotting when you know it can kill you?!?

By holding back your period, you are holding in old eggs that the body needs to get rid of. So, why do a dumb thing like take a pill to make your periods shorter?!? Did you know that most methods of birth control and such are created by men? What do they know about a woman's body other than what they read in medical school?!?

Think about it ladies. Do not risk your lives cause it's not worth it!

Some of you have given great answers to this question so it will be hard to choose a best answer. Some of you are so stupid for not reading the question carefully.

I never said the pill held back eggs. I said taking pills to shorten your periods do that. I know what birth control pills do. I have tried them and they don't work. I don't care if you think they work for you.

You will find out in the long run that it was all a waste of time. Anyway, if you really wanna help your periods, take vitamin E that works and it's safer.

For those who said I don't know my facts, you are all wrong. I work in the medical field and I know what I am saying. I am not about to list all the facts cause you are supposed to know them.

For those who were saying take a painkiller for your headache etcetera, I wouldn't take anything for pain. I don't believe in poisoning my body. I can deal with pain in a natural way.

I am glad to see that alot of you see things my way. You have been great!

I don't believe in birthcontrol pills first of all. Been there, done that, and didn't even get a tee-shirt LOL. But for reals, they didn't help with my periods, made them worse actullay. On top on weight gain and feeling terrible. I think some girls take them for sex, so they think they wont get pregnant and gives an okay to have sex with whoever. Little do they relize that isn't true and to talk your parents into getting you on them is in other words it is okay to have sex, I got pregaunt on them so I know it is possible. The health risks of being on them isn't worth it either, I don't think many people read the small print about what these drugs will do to you now or years to come. I think your body knows what to do and how to do it, let it run its own course. If you hate wearing pads or using tampons then join the crowd. If pain is your reason then you need a pain killer which actually works instead of the birth control pills can help you they say, which is a lie. It is crazy how when we are young most girls say they can't wait to start, to feel older and etc. then when you have your period you try to find ways of controlling it and then as we get older we don't look forward to our periods stopping to go into menopause which causes other problems...Crazy life circle!!!
Listen, if you can whenever you can don't use drugs to make your body do something it isn't supposed to do different, learn to give in and deal with it and please know all the facts before deciding on something to use and for those girls that want birthcontrol so they can have sex without worring...you might not get pregnant but aids and etc are still at your risk and not a pill out there can help you with that. You play , you pay!!

First off, your body doesnt hold your eggs back when you take pills. They are still shed, along with your uterus. Sometimes that is where the 'large clumps' of blood come from. Secondly I would like to say that there are not all bad things that come from the pill. I am sexually active, but when i FIRST started taking birth control, it was because I would skip 3 months, then get my period for a month, skip a while, then it would come back. (Keep in mind, i was not sexually active at this point.) AND ALL DOCTORS are required to tell you the possible side effects of pills. IF YOU DONT LIKE THE RISK, DONT TAKE THEM! Plain and simple. AND if taken as perscribed, you should have no problems. So dont just think about the bad things, think about the good things that the pill does. It helps a LOT of women. Oh, and by the way....Next time you post a question, and reward 10 points for something...Make sure you have all the facts straight....Else the question should be invalid and void.

I agree about messing with your period to shorten it. That should be left alone and let to run however many days it goes.

However, you're wrong about the "holding back eggs". You can't hold back what never forms to start with. There aren't a bunch of eggs "waiting" to come out. Look it up.

Some of us need the birth control pills (like me); for without them, I have problems (menopausal symptoms, no periods at all, forever bleeding). I don't ovulate at all. With the pill, my body is normal and I have periods. The birth control pill is safe for those of us who use it properly and don't have underlying medical conditions (smoking and heart conditions) to begin with. Plus, the prevention of ovarian cancer and pregnancy (best protection of everything, other than abstinence) are two extra benefits.

ALL medications hurt us in the long run; it's not just the birth control pills.

Also, it has been proven that it is not necessary for women to have periods every month. Many women naturally do not have monthly periods (no hormonal problems). They should not take anything to make them have monthly periods.

Likewise, women shouldn't take anything to make them stop having periods altogether. That's not natural.

Even with birth control, there are advantages, for example my sister has incredibly painful cycles so she takes birth control pills to ease her pain. It's true, they should advertise that these products aren't all perfect and can cause you harm, but let's face it there's tons of other products who are also harmful and they hardly mention That on the commercials, if at all.
I am all for birth control products, because the mere idea of me getting pregnant sends me off into depression. I still do agree with you, but you have to realise that some people keep priorities, and some harm that they receive by birth control might be overlooked because they wish to achieve something else with it more. In that sense, it IS worth it for them... so i guess it all comes down to how much you care for your own body - even if they don't adress the product as dangerous... c'mon we weren't born yesterday, we have all learned by now that the commercials lie. If a girl cared for things that you describe, she would look up the side effects of the product and consult other people about it, etc. (although there are always the ignorant ones who still believe that smoking causes no harm - god bless the warning labels, huh?)

To those who say you shouldn't stop something that your body is meant to do - think about all the remedies we've invented for various diseases and conditions. If you think this way, then you will also say no to cancer research, to treating depression and to abortion - because hey if they die, it's just what they were meant to do!!! How about if that someone was you or someone you cared for? Damn Darwinists... tsk tsk =P

i dont agree simply because it is different for every woman. if you smoke/and or over the age of 35 you have a higher risk of developing side effects, these side affects are usually mild!...it is a personal choice and if you are a healthy person who doesnt smoke, and needs the pill for various reasons then what is the problem? there are "risks" you taking driving in your car each morning, walking through the mall, eating too much, its all in how you are with the product. if you are responsible and take care of yourself birth control is a great way to get rid of bad cramps during your period, acne many people suffer from, and unwanted pregnancies! People who say "you are messing with mother nature" think of this, if you have a horrible agonizing headache, backache, etc DONT take any asprin for it!!!-your messing with what mother nature wants!!! thats just silly, there are many medications out there that are here to help, so use them if you are suffering! i think the pill is a great thing for people who are responsible and need it for various reasons. i completly respect your opinion, and there is mine. =)

I agree! why mess with Mother Nature? And it is harmful. In my opinion....I believe that things happen for a reason period! I don't care who you are! If you are meant to have a Baby then you will have one, regaurdless of being on the pill or not. If you are not meant, you won't. As far as the period thing goes, you are just altering what your Body is supposed to do! Common sense says that if you don't let your body do what it is supposed to something will go wrong, eventially! Just like holding your bladder, Your not supposed to because it will become harmful so people don't do it. just like holding all that stuff back that is supposed to exit your body during your cycle, and if you don't it definately will harm you!

I would have to disagree with this. The commercials do tell you the risk of being on birth control, and during the consultation with the doctor they tell you of the risk. All medicines we take have side effects and risks to it. They have even proven that if you take asprin and ibuprofrin too much it can harm you.
I am on birth control not only for horrible periods, but also because I am at a risk for endometriosis. I usually take the oral medicine, but I have also been on the shots. With the oral medicine you still have your period and shed tissue. However with the shots you have neither.

I agree. I don't use hormonal birth control and I won't ever use it. We're meant to bleed every month and I don't believe in disrupting my cycle in order to live a more "free" lifestyle. I figure, this is how we are designed, and this is how I will be. I do support a woman's need for birth control however, so I can't judge women who do use hormonal birth control, I'm just saying I don't think it's an ideal situation healthwise, even though it's been a liberating option for millions of women worldwide.
