The iPod IS an MP3 player.

The iPod is pretty much the best all-around player, but you pay a premium for it.

Other players are better at certain things. Some (notably Iriver) are reputed to have better sound quality, some are smaller (Mobiblu), some have better battery life (some Mobiblu players), some take forms some people might find to be superior (TAVI with their clamshell design). Some have different controls which you may like more (the Rio players, with their scroll wheels, were better for one handed use, IMO.)

The biggest down side of iPods is that you have to use iTunes to load music onto them. I loathe that program, and it's why I've never owned an iPod myself. (I've played around with friends' ipods, and I bought my dad one...because it is a very good player for the technically inept.)

If you want to save a few bucks, know what you want from a player, and like the convenience of being able to just treat your player like a removable drive and have it play your music, without having to use other software, get a non-Apple MP3 player.

If you don't know what you want in a player, the iPod is for you. Except for the Shuffle, none of them have any real killer shortcomings.

edit: Itunes does not change the format of your music. The ipod plays MP3s natively. Sony players convert music to their ATRAC format...or older ones did anyway...but Apple doesn't. All Itunes does is make the Ipod recognize that the files you load on it are music files (I'm guessing it builds the database...most non-apple players do that either every time you start the player, or every time you load new files on it) It's still a nuisance, though.

The Ipod is a fad. Everyone that gives it a bug thumbs up has probably not even tried anything else. I've used Ipods and other brands of MP3 players.

Right now I have a Creative Zen Vision:M MP3/Video player and I absolutely love it. It has 30Gb of storage and is $50 cheaper than the Ipod. Plus, I DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE ALL OF MY MP3'S TO iTUNES!! I can just put my MP3's onto my MP3 player and then go. With the iPod you have to change the format to iTunes WHICH ONLY PLAY ON iPOD'S AND NOTHING ELSE!

An ipod is better because if you buy a ipod nano you get to have a screen and play games on it. I have an ipod and a mp3 player but I use the ipod more.

it depends if you are a apple user or not. if you are a mac person then ipod. Otherwise an mp3 player simply to not be locked in to apple and itunes. It is far easier to plug the mp3 player into XP and have it pop up as a removable drive.

I love my Mp3 much more than I ever would an Ipod, but I have a video Mp3. I have a Sansa. It's really cool because it's black, and the circle in the middle(That you select songs with or turn up volume) lights up blue! Everyone says mine looks cooler than and Ipod. Plus, mine has 2 GB, so that's pretty cool too!

An ipod IS an mp3 player.. I think that the i-pod is a big fad... There are plenty of mp3 players that work just as well.

My chum has a Zen with a recorder with respectable area and a lifelike elementary interface. or you should get an Ipod and purchase a MicroMemo. I have one and that i love it, tremendous sound high quality. i even use it to record my guitar to play with diverse tracks and issues. stay remote from the Zune.

IPOD's are made by apple which means they suck, seriously though ever play with one they feel flimsy as hell. I have a generic Colby brand one got it for 30 bucks at big lots it works great.
