I am travelling around INDIA and am going alone i wanted to know how is a compass used ?

Times have changed. A compass is a thing of the past. Almost unreliable. You'd better change over to the GPSS, the Global Positioning Satelite System which may even work on your cellphone. Rest is nonsense. Do not live in the past at square one. Come into reality.

What's a square compass? I've seen the round ones only.

A coompass always points true north.
so...if you face north South will be behind you, the east at your right hand, and the west at you left.
at least that is how they work here in the USA
I have never heard of a "square compass"
