Because it was hurricane season? Are you talking about New Orleans and the flood or the hurricane?

In short:

The Gulf was nice and hot.

It formed just like any hurricane, really. However, it didn't hit too much on its way in to Mississippi and Louisiana. It took a little nip at Florida, then brewed in the gulf for a few days before it roared towards Singing River.

Alternatively, the government, terrorists, or aliens did it. Believe what you may.

For future reference, there seems to be a major hurricane in the US about every thirty five years. The Galveston Hurricane occured in 1935 (I think), Camille in 1969, and now Katrina in 2005. Camille and Katrina took place within twelve days of each other; Camille on August 17, Katrina on August 29. It seems that August is the worst month of hurricane season.

Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas on Aug 23, 2005. It crossed Southern Florida as a category 1 storm going back into the Gulf of Mexico and building up to a category 5 storm. It struck land at the Louisiana/Mississippi line...right at about Waveland, Mississippi on August 29 as a category 3 storm. It carried a tremendous storm surge which devastated the Mississippi cities of Waveland, Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport and Biloxi. It did considerable damage along the beaches of the Mississippi towns of Ocean Springs and Pascagoula and all the way to Mobile, Alabama. It destroyed the bridge connecting Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian on Hwy 90 and it also destroyed the bridge that connects Biloxi and Ocean Springs. These bridges are still out. Along Hwy 90 from Biloxi to Pass Christian all the businesses and residences were totally destroyed. Today there is still no gas station along this area which covers approximately thirty miles on Hwy 90 and very little of anything else.
In New Orleans their levee broke and flooded parts of that city. New Orleans is below sea level.
In all 1836 people lost their lives to this storm making it the deadliest storm to hit the mainland since 1928. It also was the costliest natural disaster in US history.
As for why it happened...ACT OF GOD. Theres no stopping a hurricane. I hope this answers your question.

Hurricanes happen. Camille was a category 5 in the late '60's. Katrina was only a category 3, but it didn't blow through quickly like they usually do. It lingered and kept churning after a leisurely landfall, causing damage out of proportion to its category. And as regards NOLA, it was bad luck that it hit so close, but the major damage wasn't from the hurricane itself but from the subsequent failure of the levees.

No I cannot figure out why there was a hurricane in the middle of hurricane season, but could you tell me why we have 2 foot of snow here in the Midwest, I mean it is January and I cannot figure it out. Any ideas would help me. I wonder what the weather will be like when the snow melts, I hope it is summer!!!

Do you mean the flooding of New Orleans? That would be because the levees broke. But Katrina "happened" because it was hurricane season and because of global warming.
