Chill out, light. I don't think English is this person's first language. He just wants to know specific details.
People came for many different reasons. By 1919 immigration was controlled, and only open to Europeans. Many Chinese came, and were used for hard labor jobs, but in many cases only Chinese men were allowed, in an effort to make sure that Chinese communities didn't grow too much.
The early immigrants were from the Netherlands, UK, Spain, France, Germany, and the slaves that they brought from the west coast of Africa. They came for many reasons, some came to convert native people, some wanted adventure, some wanted to set up businesses using the resources of the New World, some wanted to take the goods of the native people and claim them for their country.
By the later half of the 19th century many of the immigrants were poor Europeans from Italy, Ireland, and Eastern Europe. Jews were also a big group. They came with hopes that they would have a better life in the US, and they were resented by a "Nativist" movement that didn't want to see an increase in immigration.

I'll admit to feeling similiar to Light! that asking for "2 paragraphs" sounds like you are asking someone to do your homework for you.

However, I will say that there was a lot of political unrest in Europe prior to 1919 that caused a lot of people to want to move. There were pogroms going on in eastern Europe, and the Great War had just ended. In 1917 the United States imposed literacy requirements to stem to flow of unskilled workers.

What do you mean by "2 paragraphs"? Are you asking people to do an assignment for you? You can easily research this information for yourself instead of cheating.
