Perhaps the public had too great expectations and didn't understand the difficulties of space exploration.

One of the main reasons we say that in the US is because the space shuttle was a total failure and we've stuck with it for 30 years.

It was designed to be able to take off from the back of a jumbo jet and achieve orbit without needing to use rocket thrusters (the boosters). It also was only supposed to be part of a large strategy that involved building a space station decades ago and at that station constructing vehicles that were not meant to enter the atmosphere in order to continue exploration.

Due to a combination of cost overruns, the incredible obstacles that had to be over come to make the failed shuttle work at all and of course good old politics, most of that plan was abandoned for decades.

Basically the space program did not progress from 1977 to 1998 at all, that is why it's been a failure.

The only disappointment is that--largely do to short sighted and ignorant fools, the space program has been all but halted.

But of course, those same fools are happy to post messages displaying their ignorance on computers that (along with a host of other technology they think popped out of a magicians hat) wouldn't exist if it weren't for that "waste of money"

It's kind of like babys -- good for nothing, a big disappointment and waste of money. But if you don't have them, then your children will not have them either.

It will take 100 years for space exploration to pay off. But if we don't do it, then we will all die here.
